Russian visa dilemma for Newcastle United fans - ChronicleLive

NEWCASTLE United fans are facing a rush for visas to make a 2,000-mile trek to Russia while an official trip has collapsed.

Strict laws in the country mean supporters have been given just days to apply for a visa ahead of the clash against FC Anzhi Makhachkala next Thursday.

And Thomas Cook, the club's official match-day tour operator, has been forced to pull the plug on plans to organise a £499 one-night package to Moscow.

It followed a race against time to apply for a visa after supporters were given a four-day window to submit applications which take five working days to process.

It's understood many supporters travelled to the Russian offices in Edinburgh to fast-track their visa applications.

In a letter circulated to fans wanting to travel, a spokesman for Thomas Cook said: "As we explained on our website at the time of booking, we plan our trips based on a minimum number of supporters travelling.

"It is with regret that bookings for the one-night trip to Moscow have not met the minimum number we required to operate.

"Therefore, in conjunction with Newcastle United FC we are unable to operate our one night trip as planned. In line with our process, we have to inform you that your application has been cancelled.

"Please accept our apologies for any disappointment caused on this occasion. We have taken this decision now due to the processing time involved in obtaining a Russia visa."

Newcastle discovered they would be playing the super-rich Russian outfit Anzhi, managed by Guus Hiddink and boasting the talent of African star Samuel Eto'o, following their 1-0 win over Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday.

It left little time for supporters to make arrangements to travel across Europe. Their Russian opponents were forced to switch the location of the game to the Russian capital after UEFA refused to allow them to play in Russia's volatile Republic of Dagestan.

Just last week reports claimed that security officers shot dead three militants in the region which is at the epicentre of an Islamist insurgency.

Mick Edmondson, owner of football memorabilia shop The Back Page, said they had not organised a trip due to a lack of interest coupled with a tight window to apply for visas.

"We only found out we were playing in Russia on Thursday and we are not running a trip because everyone has just been to Ukraine.

In 2008, Russia waived normal visa requirements for a 72-hour period for football fans with a ticket for the Champions League final in Moscow.

Michel Platini, president of European football's governing body Uefa, thanked the Russian government for an "unprecedented gesture".

On that occasion, supporters needed to present a valid match ticket, a valid passport, and a completed immigration form upon arrival in Russia. Anyone overstaying was forced to pay the fee for a regular visa.

In the 57 years of the competition, only three teams have achieved a 21-1 (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Joventut). The Whites are the team who have managed it most often, on nine occasions (12-13, 87-88, 84-85, 82-83, 81-82, 76-77, 71-72, 70-71 y 60-61). Copa Del Rey 2013: True Madrid Should Progress Past El Clasico Semifinal - Bleacher Report

Real Madrid isn't planning to get Barcelona in the Manhunter Liga rankings. This is not a viewpoint, it is basically a fact at this time. After 25 games, Barcelona is 16 points before Real Madrid on the table. With 13 games left on the La Liga schedule, Barca would need to have a disaster of legendary proportions for Real Madrid to get back into the title image. It's not occurring. And that's why Tuesday's El Clasico, the 2nd leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal between both of these Spanish superpowers, is so essential for Real Madrid. For a group like Real Madrid, a domestic cup might be quite a slight consolation prize to the league title, especially in a season when your league competitor is indeed far before you in the standings. But evolving past Barca continues to be a prize by itself, and could signal a potential Champions League function for Los Blancos. Nothing is guaranteed in that respect, needless to say. Real Madrid still gets the 2nd leg against Manchester United to manage, though Los Blancos have to travel to Old Trafford, and the Red Devils previously managed an away-goal 1-1 draw. The situation is the same for Real Madrid against Barcelona at Camp Nou, with the initial leg also ending in a 1-1 draw. It surely won't be easy for Cristiano Ronaldo (39 objectives in 42 appearances) and Co. to advance in either competition. Imagine what a challenging fourteen days Real Madrid could have. After facing Barca in the Copa del Rey, the team returns home for a Liga El Clasico. After that, it's Champions League time against Manchester United. For Madrid, then, the Copa del Rey draw is not just about advancing; it's about starting an arduous three-game stretch with some good momentum. If Madrid is pulled out of the Copa del Rey and Champions League and doesn't close the gap against Barca, the growing season, for many purposes and intents, will undoubtedly be over. And a season shouldn't be over for Real Madrid in early March. Never. Los Blancos have been playing better lately. Game has been lost just one by them since January, winning eight games and drawing four. Despite two hard road tests, I would be prepared to start to see the most readily useful Real Madrid has to offer. Remember, few groups tend to be more dangerous. Barcelona knows exactly about the Los Blancos' counterattack, while Manchester United knows it will have its hands full contrary to the classy selection Real Madrid trots out. But one game at the same time. What must Real Madrid do to gain the Copa del Rey semifinal? Clearly, against Barcelona, playing stout protection and disrupting the midfield may be the first concern. Barcelona is going to generally speaking gain the possession fight, but if you can clog up the midfield and reduce the cracks in your protection that Barca spreads by finding and exploiting, a shot has been got by you. And as always, using the possibilities presented on the counterattack is vital. Few teams in the world, if any, tend to be more dangerous in place than United, in no little part due to Ronaldo, but additionally because the imagination of Mesut Ozil, the pace of Angel di MarAa and the motion of Karim Benzema. Getting an early goal at Camp Nou would be massive, but blocking Barca from owning in the early stages must be the first concern. True Madrid must take the crowd out of the game early, create its ownArhythmAand hit once the opportunity gifts. Los Blancos have fought in La Liga play by its own standards, but there's still equipment out there for the taking. It will not be a simple job, but Real Madrid must go on in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday. Failing to take action may induce aAdevastatingAtwo weeks that basically finishes the season way too early for Los Blancos.

Barcelona will face off against fierce rivals Real Madrid in the second leg of the 2013 Copa Del Rey in just a few days time, in what promises to be a huge encounter with the tie currently balanced on a knife edge. Football fans across the world will be tuning into the showdown to see who comes out on top between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - arguably the two best players on the planet right now.

In the first leg, the sides battled out a 1-1 draw as nothing could separate the teams, in a closely fought encounter.

Madrid defender Rafael Varane, who is just 19 years of age, was one of the stand out stars of the night, and provided Madrid with a fearless defensive display to keep the big guns of Barcelona quiet for most of the night.

Pa. gov's filing defends antitrust suit vs. NCAA

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett argued in a court document filed late Monday that the NCAA has been trying to use his antitrust lawsuit against it over the Penn State penalties in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal to combat what he describes as a groundswell of public criticism.

Corbett said the judge should not grant the NCAA's request to dismiss the case, saying college sports' governing body made a factual error when it said the penalties were voted on by the university's trustees.

Corbett, who as governor is a trustee, said the NCAA's motion to dismiss the lawsuit he filed in early January "appears to have been written more to advance the NCAA's broader agenda, and to combat the recent groundswell of public criticism against the embattled organization, than to raise legal issues appropriate to a motion to dismiss."

The Republican governor's lawsuit asks the judge to throw out all the penalties, including a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl ban and the loss of football scholarships. He claims the consent agreement has harmed students, business owners and others.

"The NCAA wrongly claims that its arbitrary decimation of the PSU football program is no different than its enforcement of rules regulating player eligibility or uniforms — which do enhance collegiate competition — although PSU was not found to have violated a single NCAA rule and the NCAA's own president insisted that the consent decree was not an enforcement action," Corbett's lawyers wrote.

Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator at the college football powerhouse, was convicted last summer of sexually abusing several boys, some on campus. He is serving a 30- to 60-year state prison sentence. He is appealing and maintains his innocence.

The consent agreement between the NCAA and Penn State was signed a few weeks after Sandusky was found guilty of 45 criminal counts. Penn State is not a party to Corbett's antitrust lawsuit or to the NCAA's lawsuit filed last week against Corbett and three state officials over a newly enacted state law that is designed to keep the $60 million within the state.

Liverpool FC And Tottenham Hotspur Are Thinking About Dutch Defensive Mixture - The Difficult Tackle

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are carefully monitoring Stefan p Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi of Feyenoord. Stefan delaware Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi have experienced meteoric progress within their reputations in 2010. Leading European groups from England and Germany have scouted them in current games and there are a large amount of speculations regarding their potential at Feyenoord. In the recently concluded international friendly between Holland and Italy, the duo was started by national team coach Louis van Gaal in the center of the Dutch defense and they impressed everyone showing maturity beyond their years. De Vrij and Martins Indi is expected to turn into a permanent fixture in the national group for a long time to come. Incidentally, both 21-year-olds were born only three days besides each other. P Vrij exchanged Ron Vlaar since the chief of the Feyenoord area at the beginning of this year, at a very young age. The Dutchman has recently drawn serious from Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United last summer, but decided against going away from the team through that period. But his current contract expires in 2014 and reports suggest that shares for an new contract have delayed. De Vrij can consider his options at the end of this time. aI want to see what is happening today. aI can concentrate on playing for the club and for Holland, but I wonat sit back with the club now about a new Acontract.a a De Vrij was quoted in the media. Martins Indi on the other hand is really a functional opponent, who is able to perform both as a left-back and as a heart back a' even though he enjoys playing through the heart. The Dutch global plays plainly as a for Feyenoord but plays through the center for his national area. His size has often seen him attract comparison with former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam. He signed a contract extension, that'll hold him at De Kuip till 2016, just couple of days back. Recent studies from England claim that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have joined the battle for landing the defensive pair in the summertime. Liverpool are appearing worried about the ongoing future of Sebastian Coates, who has been linked with a shift back to Italy with Juventus interested in signing him. Tottenham on the other hand are trying to add depth to their group with future of Gallas and Dawson in question. Feyenoord have reportedly set a combined price of A25million for the Dutch couple. It'd be interesting to see if Liverpool and Tottenham are pushed away by Feyenoordas high demands. But there may be no scarcity of suitors for Martins Indi and De Vrij this summer a' it is possible to be prepared to see them at a top European membership next year.

Finchem says PGA Tour opposes ban on anchoring

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) a PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem put a big wrinkle to the plan to outlaw the attached getting swing when he said Sunday the tour opposed the ban because there wasn't enough evidence to suggest participants had an advantage using a long club. "We hold the USGA in best regard as an integral the main game of golf," Finchem said. "We do not attempt to denigrate that place by any means whatsoever. It is if they were to maneuver forward they would be making a mistake." just with this problem, we believe The U.S. Tennis Association and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club announced Nov. 28 a rule that would prohibit players from anchoring the club with their body, the technique employed for stomach putters and broom-handled putters that are pressed contrary to the chest. A belly putter was used by three of the last five major champions. The governing bodies are nearing the finish of a 90-day review period before deciding whether to adopt the concept, which will not take effect until 2016. Finchem has been meeting with his players the last few months, with USGA government director Mike Davis presenting the principle to a player meeting in North Park last week. Finchem sent a to the USGA and R&A on Friday to mention the tour's position. The ban is also opposed by the PGA of America. "I think the essential bond that had the thinking of the participants... was that in the absence of knowledge or any basis to consider that there's a advantage to be obtained by using anchoring, and given the total amount of time that anchoring has been doing the overall game, that there is no overriding reason to go down that road," Finchem said. The long club has develop into a polarizing issue in recent years, even though it has existed the past four years. The USGA and R&A said they wished to exclude the secured stroke because they felt it got a lot of talent from the game. While the club moving easily through the whole swing their goal was to establish the golf swing. They admitted in November there was no scientific data, just a new surge in more people using long putters. Finchem wanted to make clear that the PGA Tour wasn't in a with the USGA over the rules are set by who. Rather, he was giving an answer to its request review. Nevertheless, it puts the USGA in a position of going through with the bar or backing down because the PGA Tour opposes it. Finchem has said over the last month that while slightly different rules for the PGA Tour are suitable, he didn't think anchoring would be one of them. And he didn't indicate which way the tour would go if the USGA followed through with the bar. Much time hasn't been spent by "i worrying about that," Finchem said. "That would be speculation, and I've certainly not thought about it. I've thought more about some aspects of bifurcation, if it would work or not. But I believe that the focus here should really be, if possible, to go down the same road, the same road is gone down by everybody on anchoring, and that is truly where we're right now. "We just hope they take our view on it," he said. "We'll see." The USGA issued a statement it is hearing "many profitable interactions across the tennis community" on the proposed rule. "As we consider the different perspectives on anchoring, it has been our position that Rule 14-1b aims to clarify and protect the traditional and essential character of the golf stroke, which has helped to produce golf an original and pleasant game of skill and challenge," the statement said. The USGA said it'd choose the proposed rule in the spring. The tour's opposition to the anchoring ban was not surprising. Finchem met with his 16-member Player Advisory Council and policy board a week ago, and a few people had mentioned that the trip would not in favor of the USGA. Where it leads continues to be up in the air. Finchem said the shortage of empirical data was an issue, combined with the fact golf's governing bodies have allowed long putters during the last two generations of golf. He suggested that if the USGA had tried to exclude the secured stroke in 1975, not many might have protested. "I think we're able to understand it if for some reason or still another... For the game of golf," Finchem said It'd negative results. "We need certainly to look at it from the viewpoint of is it good, bad or indifferent for the overall game as a a professional level, inexperienced level a' and we consider that it's not (a bad thing )."

Greatest ever: Manchester United's fantastic oldie Ryan Giggs pushes success over... - Mirror.co.uk

Fourteen days before a as Planet Football gushed over ACristiano Ronaldo a' some fans and commentators praised the Actual Madrid star while the best person Manchester United have ever seen. Without a doubt, there's a whole lot to place Ronaldo right up there. The goals he's won, the awards he's won and the big times he has manufactured in some massive games. when he left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu) (As well as, obviously, the sum of money he pulled into the team. But, never mind United, English basketball might never see the like of Ryan Giggs again. The 39-year-old Welsh wingeras 80th-minute attack closed the things for United at QPR and established a 15-point lead starting Sundayas activities. Giggs had developed. All over again. In his 999th aggressive appearance - 19 years following a surprise target in a gain at Loftus Road back in February 1994. Before and after that game both he and United have displayed a desire and a hunger to ensure that each time Sir Alex Fergusonas males have lost the title they have ultimately gone to win it back in style. Manchester City employer Roberto Mancini spouted total claptrap on Saturday, declaring United was fortunate to stack up the items that have given them such a strong advantage. The simple truth is, Giggs sums up the invincible spirit that exists within the United side. He is an ideal example of how to not sleep in your laurels. QPR manager Harry Redknapp said after Saturdayas final whistle: aHe is top-class. A fantastic player. aIts very hard to consider anyone with his endurance. AEspecially now in todayas contemporary basketball, with the rate of the game.a Giggs is an example from whom greater than a handful of Cityas multi-millionaire players, who have not resulted in this year, can understand. His profitable mentality could be the reasons why the following 11 games total much more than the usual lap of honour for United that are on course to get to be the Premier Leagueas best subject winners ever. Players like Giggs would be the reasons why Sir Alex has been able to bring through therefore many young people, with the Welshmanas appetite serving whilst the formula for success. He is among the leading people that I've enjoyed. aHe gives us experience, confidence, and when you are feeling bad he comes and helps you, particularly young players. aSometimes a young person find it hard going and he helps them. He shows them how to get it done. aHe understands it from playing 22 years. The player is pulled by him aside. He spoke if you ask me a great deal when I was young.a The consequence of Giggsas smart terms is visible in the confidence with that the loves of Rafael are playing today. QPR was frustrating the Reds until a thunderbolt was unleashed by the 22-year-old in to the top place. From that time onwards it was game around with Rangers ponderous in midfield and toothless in attack. It might have been worse had Robin van Persie not been Asubstituted after falling into a camera gap behind the Rangers purpose and bruising his hip. Credit to Bobby Zamora, although, for virtually playing using one leg to greatly help his home group. Loic Remyas minute half reunite from injury is critical to Rangers having any chance while Andros Townsend is another who did well on the afternoon. But this is never likely to be a game on which Rangers could be evaluated and finally they were not adequate enough to just take United down. Jamie Mackie, his voice cracking with emotion, angrily dismissed the idea that people don't care about the clubas plight and think more about their pay packets than the effect. aIf it comes down to caring then the lads have been putting a transfer in.a he explained, my way was worked by aIave up through the Leagues and now I play in the Premier League. aIad be devastated easily was not in the Premier League any longer. Weave only dropped 2-0! Iam not planning to come out smiling. I hate losing football matches. It has been an excessive amount of an everyday event. aIts the same for the kids. Its hard to start getting around and giving and come out right away rallying cries. Their hard. aBut come Monday weall start again. Iam the type of personality that never allows up.a A sketch is just no good to Rangers a few weeks when they travel to Southampton. They've to build up a winning mentality. Jimmie Johnson wins Daytona 500 for 2nd time

After winning the Daytona 500 for the second time, Johnson gave a shoutout to his sponsor Lowe's, the home improvement chain.

Danica Patrick was running third heading to the final lap, but she dropped back to eighth as everyone jostled for position.

Johnson, a five-time champion, also won the 500 in 2006. But he's had some tough finishes in recent years, including a 42nd-place flameout in 2012.

Jimmie Johnson leads and Danica Patrick is still in the mix after a late caution flag for debris on the track in turn two.

When the green flag came out with six laps to go, Johnson was followed by defending Cup champion Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer. Patrick is running sixth.

Defending champ Matt Kenseth had led more laps than anyone when, suddenly, his car began smoking on lap 149. He headed to pit road and it didn't take long for the crew to push him behind the wall, ruining any hopes of becoming the first back-to-back winner since Sterling Marlin in 1994-95.

Kenseth and his new teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin, were actually running 1-2-3 when Kenseth had some sort of engine or transmission problem. Just two laps later, Busch's car also went out, smoking as well, sending the driver of the No. 18 machine storming through the garage, ripping off his racesuit.

"It's really unfortunate," Busch said. "We were running 1-2-3 and it felt like we were dropping like flies. Something inside the motor broke that's not supposed to break. It's a little devastating when you're running 1-2-3 like that. Hopefully the No. 11 (Hamlin) can bring it home."

Edwards was caught up in a crash heading into turn one at the Daytona 500, another case of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Trevor Bayne bumped Brad Keselowski from behind, which sent the No. 21 car sliding sideways.

Stewart was 82 laps behind the leaders when he rolled out of the garage after an early crash. His frustration was never more evident than when he joined in the repair effort, banging on his No. 14 car with a hammer during the long stint in the paddock.

"To hell with the season," Stewart said. "I wanted to win the Daytona 500. We had a car that we could pass with today. We were passing cars by ourselves. I was so happy with our car, was just waiting for it to all get sorted out again. I don't know what started it, but we just got caught up in another wreck."

Stewart's misfortune came a day after he won the lower-division Nationwide race — his 19th career triumph at Daytona.

While there's nothing unusual about Kenseth leading at Daytona, where he's won two of the last three years, it's a bit jarring to see him doing it in the No. 20 car.

Kenseth had spent his entire Cup career driving the No. 17 machine for Roush Fenway Racing, but he switched to Joe Gibbs Racing this season. He's got a new car, a new number, a new sponsor and a new team.

The first woman to start from the pole at the Daytona 500 has become the first female to lead a lap in a NASCAR Cup race.

Patrick sent the huge crowd into a frenzy when she snatched the lead from Michael Waltrip on lap 90 after a series of pit stops under yellow. She led two laps before Denny Hamlin surged to the front.

But Patrick has shown her qualifying run was no fluke. She's got a strong car and has been in the top 10 all day as the 200-lap race approaches the midway point.

Patrick switched to NASCAR last year after becoming the first woman to lead laps at the Indianapolis 500, as well as being the first to win an IndyCar race.

In the strangest part of the buildup to the Daytona 500, Mr. Cent brought back memories of Joe Namath's awkward attempt to plant one on Suzy Kolber when he tried the same move with Andrews on pit road.

Former 500 winners Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Jamie McMurray were caught up in the crash on lap 33. So was defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski.

The melee began coming through the tri-oval when Kasey Kahne's car began to slide across the track after appearing to get bumped from behind by Kyle Busch.

At least two other drivers also got caught up in the mess: Juan Pablo Montoya and Casey Mears. Joey Logano made a great move to dodge the spinning cars.

HANG ON TIGHT: From one defending champion to another, Brad Keselowski had a piece of advice for Daytona 500 starter Ray Lewis:

The retired Baltimore Ravens star served as honorary starter for the Daytona 500. Lewis waved the green flag without incident Sunday to start the "Great American Race."

"Brad texted me on the way in, the one rule is, don't drop the flag," Lewis said before the race. "I'm going to squeeze the flag very hard. I want to watch this and be a part of it. To be here is an awesome experience."

Lewis was one of several stars at Daytona International Speedway. Rappers T.I. and 50 Cent attended NASCAR's season opener, which has Danica Patrick starting on the pole.

Oscar-nominated actor James Franco was the grand marshall and said, "Drivers and Danica, start your engines!" The Zac Brown Band played a pre-race concert in the Daytona International Speedway infield. Band member Clay Cook performed the national anthem.

Retired baseball pitcher Tom Gordon, comedian Drew Carey, and Wes Welker and Steve Spurrier also were in attendance.

Lewis called Keselowski on the eve of the 2012 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and left him an inspirational voice message. Keselowski also often listens to Lewis' motivational speeches before races.

"I caught a glimpse of how he always watched my videos and it really inspired him," Lewis said. "That's when me and him really started having conversations with each other, and from there it just turned into a friendship. I send him motivational things, and heads-up on what I am doing, that's where the relationship has gone."

DANICA DROPS BACK: Danica Patrick made history by becoming the first woman to start from the pole in a NASCAR Cup race.

Choosing the outside spot on the front row, Patrick gave up the lead to Jeff Gordon on the very first lap, missing out on an early chance to become the first female to lead a Cup lap.

Patrick went on the radio before the race to thank her crew for giving her such a strong car. "I'll do the best job I can to do my end of the deal today," she said. "All in all, thank you for everything. You guys are awesome."

Later, Patrick sent the huge crowd into a frenzy when she snatched the lead from Michael Waltrip on lap 90 after a series of pit stops under yellow. She led two laps before Denny Hamlin surged to the front.

Of course, this year is different. Danica Patrick is the first woman to start from the pole in a Cup race, and Franco hinted beforehand that he was planning an audible. As unpredictable as ever, he passed on a chance to copy the command that was used when Patrick raced in the Indianapolis 500, "Lady and gentlemen, start your engines."

One day after a harrowing crash injured dozens of fans in the stands, those same seats are filling up for the Daytona 500.

"These should be good seats," said Rick Barasso, as he settled into a spot that was right in the danger zone when Kyle Larson's car slammed into the catch fencing on the final lap of a Nationwide Series race Saturday. "I mean, what are the chances of it happening again?"

That seems to be the attitude of the fans heading into the Daytona 500, the season-opening Cup race and biggest event on the NASCAR schedule. Most people say it's worth the risk to sit next to the ear-rattling action — no more than 20 feet away for those in the first row. They love to hear the engines, smell the exhaust, and feel the wind whipping in their face as 43 cars go by at nearly 200 mph.

Raymond Gober returned to the same location where he was nearly struck by a bolt from Larson's car. He scooped up the debris as a souvenir, though he acknowledged being a little nervous about his seat on the back row of the lower level. He even considered wearing his motorcycle helmet to the 500, but figured "everybody would start laughing at me." Next year, he plans to buy an upper-level seat in the main grandstand.

There are grim reminders of what happened Saturday: a bloody spot that had been washed down (not entirely, though), a tire mark on a seat, another seat that was partially bent from getting struck by that same tire.

Manchester City vs. Chelsea: Preview and TV schedule - SB Nation

Between Manchester United's form and the average performances of the Premier League's fourth-place competitors, Chelsea and Manchester City should be locked into their positions. If either side wins on Sunday, that could change.

At the beginning of the season, a February clash between Manchester City and Chelsea would have been seen as a truly marquee encounter between two teams with plenty to play for. Any game between the second and third best teams in England is worth watching, without a doubt, but a lot of the luster has disappeared from this fixture.

Both sides are simply treading water, having seasons that can be considered neither good, nor disastrous. City could catch Manchester United in a miracle scenario and Chelsea could fall out of the top four with a collapse, but both scenarios seem unlikely. City and Chelsea seem to be fighting to live another day, just making sure that they don't dig a hole for themselves heading into next season.

City trail Manchester United by 15 points, but a fall below all of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal would be unimaginable. Chelsea are only one point above Spurs, but their goal differential of plus-27 suggests that a fall below fourth place is unlikely. Rafael Benitez and Roberto Mancini are both virtual dead men walking, hoping to secure enough positive results to save their jobs for next season, but that's likely to prove a futile endeavor for both men.

So, what's the point of this game anyway? Really, it's just self-preservation. Both teams are trying to see off a collapse. Hopefully that doesn't result in a bore draw.

Richards and Romeu are both long-term injury concerns. Chelsea might have some fitness issues after playing on Thursday, but have no other injuries. Mancini will be hoping that Kompany and Barry can pass late fitness tests to make themselves available.

Yaya Toure: I want to stay at Man City forever | The Sun |Sport|Football

The Ivory Coast midfielder, 29, has enjoyed a nomadic career — never staying more than three years at any club, not even Barcelona.

But he now feels ready to put down some roots after arriving at the Etihad in summer 2010 and he would like to pledge the rest of his career to City.

Toure believes his game is perfectly suited to Premier League football and feels boss Roberto Mancini has worked out the best way to use him.

He still has two years left on his deal at City but said: "I want to give all to this club for a long time. It's quite strange because all my career I've been with clubs for two or three years.

"Sometimes you're not happy with something or you don't feel comfortable in the city and you need change — but not here.

"Of course I'd like to end my career here. For three years it has been enjoyable to be with guys who love you, guys who care about you."

Toure won a Champions League medal at the Nou Camp but was generally used as a defensive midfielder or even a centre-back.

However at City he has become known as a scorer of crucial goals — such as the FA Cup final winner in 2011 and his vital double at Newcastle in the penultimate game of last season.

"He knew me when I played for Monaco against his Inter team. It was he who decided to put me more forward. Since coming to City I have enjoyed my football more because my game is all about attack and what I did at Barcelona was quite different.

"In England the football is all about power, strong running and tackling. I feel like this is home for me and the fans are lovely."

And Toure is not convinced the brand of football seen in the Nou Camp would work in England. He said: "I don't think so because in Spain the football is different. More quality, more technical.

"You don't have the same time to control the ball and look for a team-mate. You have to be quick, otherwise someone like Kyle Walker will take you in the back! The tempo is fantastic."

City's title defence fell apart while Toure was at the African Nations Cup — they are 15 points behind leaders Manchester United going into today's Chelsea clash.

"When I was away we didn't get the right results and January is always hard because we have to play every three days.

Iker recovering from injury wants with a championship this year

Iker Casillas says his recovery from a broken bone in his hand is certainly going much better than expected and he could be right back between the Real Madrid articles when late March.

Casillas' hand was broken by an accidental kick from his team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa all through Madrid's Copa del Rey quarter-final game at the Mestalla on January 23.

It was feared he'd face 90 days on the sidelines, and the team moved quickly to signal Diego Lopez for 3.5 million from Sevilla to perform in their likely season-defining games against Barcelona in the Copa and Manchester United in the Champions League.

The Madrid club chief told reporters on Thursday night, at the opening of a new club shop at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, that the first timeframe had only been a worst-case scenario.

"I am feeling very positive," Casillas said. "The doctor gave me the worst-case scenario, he said it might take 3 months. But when the splint was removed the other day, I was told I had four weeks left. Now I am doing effective exercises to get mobility and power back in the finger."

Casillas said he'd been spending so much time at Madrid's Valdebebas education service to have straight back playing when possible.

"Until now I've not had much power in it, but I'm getting it back little by little," he explained. "We have reached the halfway point of the damage. I have still got monthly to go. I'll need certainly to work more and suffer more to get right back the flexibility of before. I'm looking towards returning. It is worse being off the pitch than on it."

The big event was also attended by Casillas' team-mates including Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria, Jose Callejon, Nacho and Kaka, though coach Jose Mourinho was missing.

Alonso told reporters that he did not know yet whether he would recover from his crotch issue with time for next Tuesday's Copa semi-final second leg at Barcelona's Camp Nou.

"I am in the healing stage," the midfielder said. "I am looking to get better when possible, to get rid of the distress and get back in top form. A lot of people ask when I'll prepare yourself. I hope to be able to perform against Barca, but I do not have a solution right now."

Former Liverpool person Alonso said that, with the link balanced at 1-1, whoever obtained first in the Champions League last 16 reunite game at Manchester United on March 5 will be favourites to advance.

"They could have the support of these fans," he said. "It will be a challenge. The side that results first will be favourites. Old Trafford is a superb surface and it is the kind of match most of us prefer to play. The link is quite open."

Di Maria stated that it could fit Madrid to be playing abroad in both of the forthcoming, possibly season-defining, activities.

"Things are getting well and develop to continue this way," he explained. "We know that we have to have big matches in both tournaments and that it will perhaps not be easy. Since we do well when things are against us perhaps playing away will be in our favor. We have had this week to focus on the easiest way to approach the games. I am hoping everything goes well."

Benzema, who remains question for Saturday evening's La Liga sport at Deportivo La Coruna, said he wasn't focused on his recent bad form in front of goal.

"I trust that I score more goals than I have up to now, but the important things may be the team and to win the forthcoming matches," he said. "We have to work together to get. We have a fantastic team and we are all in good form."

Kaka played terrific in the match vs Deportivo

"From the initial minute of the next half we saw a big change of attitude. We didn't get because of the substitutions, that have been made in the twelfth minute of the second half, but because of the change we made. It was the attitude of all the participants that started the recovery.

"It holds true that actually he [Kaka] is playing well. His mind-set assists him and this is essential for the team, that he is another alternative and that he is playing well. That is always positive.

Kaka's performance also received the praise of assistant mentor Aitor Karanka, who was pleased about the reaction of the squad after going behind to a Riki strike on 35 minutes.
"We knew that Deportivo weren't playing well and saw us being an chance to change their fortunes. But in the second half we improved our play, we scored two goals and we could actually take the three items home with us."

Before the Blaugrana surrounded out Sevilla later on Saturday night, the win moved Real to within 13 points of group leaders Barcelona. Regardless of the margin remaining the exact same, Kaka thinks victory over Depor could improve Real's chances of claiming silverware this period.

"I am a lot better. What we have nearby is interesting and it is the critical the main year and if the director wants me to play I will be there to help in those matches."

"The group is playing well and things are becoming better for me too. In soccer every thing changes rapidly and I am very happy to support the team win.
"[It was] an essential success really hard match. In the first half we were only a little troubled and we made a couple of errors. In the second half we improved and we won three points which can be essential for us and for what is to come over the next several weeks," Kaka told the club's officers site.
Real originated from behind at the Riazor, with Kaka scoring the equaliser before an 88th-minute winner was scored by Gonzalo Higuain for the guests. After suffering a difficult spell with limited game time, Kaka now feels he is able to help his staff as they turn to hold their La Liga and Champions League hopes alive.

Kaka has expressed delight at his recent change in fortunes, while the playmaker starred in Real Madrid's 2-1 comeback win over Deportivo Manhunter Coruna.

"It holds true that actually he [Kaka] is playing well. He is helped by his state of mind and this is necessary for the group, that he is playing well and that he's another alternative. That's usually good.

Kaka's performance also received the reward of assistant mentor Aitor Karanka, who had been happy with the result of the group after planning behind to a Riki strike on 35 minutes.

Liverpool FC Feature: Exit at hands of Zenit should inspire Reds in ...

KOP legend Alan Kennedy believes Liverpool's heartbreaking Europa League exit should provide the perfect motivation for Brendan Rodgers' side to deliver in the Premier League between now and May.

The Reds' last hope of silverware this season disappeared on a dramatic night as they fought back from 3-0 down on aggregate against Zenit St Petersburg to draw 3-3 but bowed out on away goals.

Two-times European Cup winner Kennedy was at Anfield to witness a thrilling encounter and says the current crop must now focus on ensuring Liverpool are involved in continental competition next term.

With 11 league matches to play, the seventh-placed Reds finds themselves nine points adrift of Tottenham, who occupy the final Champions League spot.

A more realistic target is the Europa League but only fifth place would guarantee qualification, while sixth would be good enough if both FA Cup finalists qualify for Europe by their league position.

"Being in Europe is vital for a club of Liverpool's stature. It was a special night on Thursday with the crowd playing their part and we came so close to pulling it off.

"Some of our players won't have played in an atmosphere like that before. They won't have experienced anything like that but having had a taste of it they should want more.

"Hopefully that will inspire them for the rest of the season. Being out of all the cups means we have to work doubly hard to make sure we get everything we can from the remaining league games.

"We need to get more consistency with our results and finish as high as we possibly can. Too often this season little lapses in concentration have cost us and we've found ourselves chasing games we were in control of.

"We need to begin every game with the kind of mentality and attitude we showed against Zenit. That has to start against Wigan next Saturday."

Kennedy, who made 359 appearances for the Reds between 1978 and 1985, was buoyed by the character Liverpool showed on Thursday night after a nightmare start.

Jamie Carragher's error allowed Hulk to fire Zenit ahead but the former Reds full-back insists the vice-captain could hold his head high.

"He wasn't fazed by what happened and led by example. Okay, he made one mistake which got punished but that's not the reason we got knocked out.

"The fact is in the first leg we created three or four really good chances over there and should have come back with at least one away goal.

"Even in the second leg after Hulk scored we had enough chances to get the four goals we needed. It didn't quite work out the way we wanted but it was a great performance. Everyone fought so hard to get back in the game.

"At 3-1 with half an hour to go it was on but it just wasn't to be. The players couldn't have given it any more. We just needed a bit of luck."

Kennedy admits he was in awe of the brilliance of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan striker took his tally for the season to 25 goals with two stunning free-kicks.

"Even Phil Neal and I were on our feet when his second goal went in! How far he bent the ball around the wall was incredible.

"Suarez has had a phenomenal season. He's only one behind Robin van Persie in the race for the Golden Boot and I'm sure he has his sights set on getting that.

"Defenders are so frightened of him. He turns them so easily and they are wary of putting their foot in. He's such a talent and his work rate is excellent.

"Suarez sees things that no-one else sees. I remember the League Cup tie at Stoke last season when he curled one in from way out on the flank. He's not afraid to try things – even when the odds are stacked against him."

The 58-year-old believes a strong finish to this campaign would help convince Suarez that the future is bright at Anfield.

Kennedy said: "I'm not sure there's a club around who could afford to buy Suarez. How much is he worth? He's priceless.

"From the club's point of view, you can't afford to allow your best players to leave. We're building for the future and we need to retain our top talent.

"Brendan is still building the team the way he wants it and I'm sure he will be looking to strengthen in a number of areas this summer. We need to build around our best players.

"If we finish this season with a great run it will give Suarez extra belief that the club is going in the right direction and can really push on next season."

Manchester City vs. Chelsea: Two dead men walking face off ...

Manchester City take on Chelsea at the weekend, and there's a high chance that when this fixture comes around next year, both managers will have departed us.

Despite Roberto Mancini's protests to the contrary, it seems likely that he will get the boot at the end of the season. In one particularly ill-advised phrase, the man who oversaw a second consecutive group-stage exit in the Champions League and a 12-point deficit in the league demanded to know: "Why would they sack me?" Rumours of Manuel Pellegrini seem the most likely, although of course there are more glamorous names hovering around.

His opposite number, Rafael Benitez, looks increasingly unlikely to be offered the job on a full-time basis. With shades of his reign at Internazionale, he has fuelled the intrinsic distrust of the fans with a series of preposterously aloof comments as his team struggles on the pitch. Every apparent breakthrough is quickly followed by a disjointed and impotent display, with last night's terrible display against Sparta Prague only the latest in a series of shambolic performances.

The real clincher for both men is that neither team appears to be playing for them. Both look like they have no hunger or drive, and have allowed the chance to compete for their stated goal of the Premier League title to slip away from them alarmingly early. In Chelsea's case, they now even face a battle to remain in the top four.

The affluence and remarkable squads of both clubs plays a factor too, but particularly in Chelsea's case, their managerial revolving door is a beast that cooks and eats itself. By sacking so many managers, they invite twice the speculation on the next one as soon as performances drop. Manchester United's success is often put down to Ferguson, with plenty of reason, but he also makes tactical blunders, bizarre rotation choices and unsuitable team selections like anybody else. Perhaps the biggest benefit he provides is one of the underrated bonuses of stability and success for so long - his position is never, ever questioned. No defeat, no matter how severe, will be followed with calls for his sacking, and no player need ever think twice about playing for him. If you're playing for Manchester United, you're playing for Alex Ferguson. What's the difference, anyway?

Of course, nobody would suggest that Chelsea or City should simply persevere with Mancini or Benitez for twenty years in the hope that one day they will achieve that level of automatic respect. But they cannot allow the situation to get out of control, where every manager is heralded as the chosen one, only for players to be considering whether it's worth bothering to heed his instruction since he'll be out the door in a week as soon as a patch of bad form comes along.

Instead, both clubs have moved towards more continental approaches, and it would seem to make sense. With the manager less of an autocrat, his image as the supreme leader of the team is dulled - he is just another staff member, and it allows there to be a degree of continuity across a period of time where the coach is changed repeatedly if necessary. Manchester City moved in this direction with the appointment of Txiki Begiristain as Director of Football. Chelsea have long taken ultimate power away from managerial hands, but at the same time, there is no other presence to absorb some of the limelight or scrutiny as appropriate. Every Chelsea manager seems stuck in an isolated position, a rabbit in the headlights between the two impenetrable and shadowy cliques of the boardroom and the dressing room.

Perhaps the eventual departures of Ashley Cole, John Terry and Frank Lampard will lessen the effect of the latter. Nobody would be surprised if Benitez were to go at the end of the season - he can only have himself to blame - but it is another embellishment of the myth that only the manager can be held responsible. Anybody taking the Chelsea job will know that there is more chance of the sun not rising than scrutiny falling upon the likes of Ron Gourlay over mismanagement.

In short, the move towards a more continental management structure makes sense for teams that are unable to deal with the prospect of dropping out of an increasingly competitive top four. But if that happens, they cannot continue to use their managers as automatic fall-guys, in the same way governments fire ministers to make it look as though something has been done. Even when the person in question is completely guilty, sometimes the system needs to be called into question too.

The Daily Mirror is today reporting news from French source Le Parisien that states that Carlo Ancelotti has already agreed terms with Real Madrid ahead of a move to take over from under-fire boss Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu.

fanatix tickets – El Clasico tickets are still available for the biggest derby match in Europe.Real Madrid vs Barcelona tickets are on sale for this massive La Liga clash at the Bernabeau on March 3rd.

The former Chelsea and AC Milan manager is said to have made a verbal agreement with the Spanish giants and will leave big spending PSG at the end of the current campaign.

Ancelotti has helped guide PSG to the top of Ligue 1 and into the last 16 of the Champions League but is still seemingly not all that stable in his position at the French capital club, stating recently;

"Yes, I want to stay. But I know that, at the end of the season, the club will decide if it is happy or not with my work."

Similarly Mourinho is strongly linked with a Real Madrid exit even though he helped the club to a La Liga crown last season.

The Portuguese boss has fallen out with a number of his star performers, resulting most recently in the surprising decision to drop skipper Iker Casillas in recent weeks, before the Spanish keeper then suffered a hand injury.
