The 2013 Kentucky Derby was a thrilling mudder of a race that was won by Orb, and the payout list is now in the books.
The track was a sloppy mess, but that didn't stop Orb from making a huge statement on one of horse racing's grandest stages.
Orb pulled away down the home stretch after hanging toward the back of the pack throughout most of the race. His final kick was jaw-dropping, and by the time Orb finished the race he and jockey Joel Rosario had a comfortable lead of a few lengths.
With a purse of $2.18 million, this race means big money for the owners of the top horses. Owners Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable earned a cool $1.41 million for Orb's two minutes of excellence.
Orb will now surely be considered the heavy favorite to win the Preakness Stakes in a few weeks time. The way this horse was able to dominate the field down the home stretch was a revelation, and his owners must be quite proud at this time.
It's been 35 years since a horse has won America's Triple Crown, but Orb looks to have what it takes to accomplish the lofty goal.

Enduring speed down the home stretch of a long race is one of the chief characteristics of championship horses, and Orb has it. Perhaps nobody should be surprised, given the horse's elite bloodlines.

Orb's stock is surging, and another win at the Preakness Stakes will have racing enthusiasts on the edge of their seats for the final leg of the Triple Crown—the brutal Belmont Stakes.
For now, however, Orb will rest up while his owners, trainer and jockey celebrate a phenomenal victory at the 139th annual Kentucky Derby.
